This summer I was a cabin leader at Camp Pinnacle. It was my first experience with Camp Pinnacle and I absolutely fell in love with it! The Lord reminded me so much of His faithfulness and the freedom we have in Christ.
There is one particular story that sort of encompasses my time at camp. To preface the story, each week some of the staffers performed a skit called “Free.” In this skit, there were 3 girls who went down the line and talked about how they were stuck in a sin or a difficult situation. The first girl struggled with gossip, the second girl struggled with a broken home, and the third girl struggled with boldness to talk to her friend about Jesus. After each girl told her struggle, I (playing the Holy Spirit) would put my hand on her shoulder and say, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Then, the girl would stand and say a Bible verse, representing her freedom in Christ.
At the end of each week, we had “porch time”, where one cabin leader would go out on the porch and the other would go into the main room, and the campers would have the opportunity to come out to either of us individually and ask us questions or talk with us. This was always such a sweet time.
One week, I had a camper come out to me during porch time and she told me how much she related to the “Free” skit. She confessed some sins to me and we talked about the struggle of sin. I talked with her about how because of Christ, we are no longer slaves of sin and it has no power over us. At the beginning of that week, I had shared my testimony with the campers during Vespers, which is our evening worship. During my testimony, I had talked about how on our own we cannot stop sinning, and we have no power over sin. Only Jesus can free us from our bondage to sin. I reminded her of what I had talked about, and the Lord kept giving me scripture to discuss with her. We discussed Romans 6-8, Ephesians 6, and 1 Samuel 3:1-10. The next morning, she told me she couldn’t stop smiling when she went to bed.
Since being home, the Lord has revealed some sins and idolatry in my own heart. He is teaching me the same things I taught the girls all summer long. On my own, I cannot stop sinning, but He has set me free from the power of sin! He has reminded me of Romans 6-8, which I continually spoke about this summer. It is amazing how the Lord orchestrates all things for His glory. He is so faithful!
